Ghanaian Women In Comedy
Ghanaian comedy has come a long way, with many greats gracing Ghana’s screens and stages with endless laughter and excitement. Comedy in itself is a unique way of creativity. It takes hard work, great craft and a psychological genius to make people laugh not withstanding their situation.
The Ghanaian comedy space can boast of many creative personalities, doing magic on screens, stages and other spaces. But it is dominated by men. Out of about a 100 counted, approximately 10 are women. Why is it so? Well, a definite explanation may be difficult to arrive at, but I guess this situation is evident in most creative spaces.
This article is focused on throwing light, Inspiring and encourage Ghanaian women in the Comedy space.
Ghana can boast of a few strong women, currently blazing the torch of Comedy, be it, Stand Up Comedy, TV Comedy, Theatre Comedy, Online Skit Acting, just to name a few.
Below are just a few names, in no particular order, we came across during the writing of this article;
Jacinta Asi Ocansey is a Ghanaian comedian with a Nigerian descend. Born to Mr. Alex Dzabaku Ocansey and Eucheria Ocansey, Jacinta is currently one of Ghana’s highly sort after stand-up comedians, playing host to countless comedy events and performances. Jacinta is multi-talented as she is into singing and acting as well.
She is currently accorded with names like, “Ghana’s only comedienne” and “Queen of Ghana comedy”. Jacinta can boast of been awarded the Most Influential Student Comedian at the Ghana Tertiary Awards 2016, Most Popular Student and Most Entertaining Student as well. She also gained nomination to the maiden edition of the Comedy and Poetry Awards as the Most Popular Comedian of the year.
Nana Ama McBrown
Felicity Ama Agyemang, popularly known as Nana Ama McBrown, is a multi-talented Ghanaian actress and TV presenter who has graced the screens for Ghana with endless excitement.
Many might ask why she is part of the article as she is yet to own up as a Comedian, but trust me, she is one of the finest faces, gracing Ghanaian with endless laughter. She is much known for her role in acting, playing comic roles in most of her movies.
Nana Ama McBrown has stared in over 30 movies and is currently engaged in TV hosting as well. She is one of the few women who has blessed Ghana with timeless humour and laughter in most of her acting roles.
Maame Esi Forson
Tarkoradi’s finest comedy skit actress, Maame Esi Forson burst unto the scene with great works and endless humour, finding her way onto Ghana’s comedy scene.
Maame Esi is very popular for her comical skits made with the Fanti language. She is also a movie producer and a business woman, as she is claimed to be among Ghana’s youngest “Rich” comic acts.
Valentina Nana Agyeiwaa, popularly known as Afia Schwarzenegger is a media and movie personality who has graced the screens over the years and is very active with her works. She might not be known by many as a comedian but trust me, she gets ribs cracking on comedy stages. She has featured on many stand-up comedy events and anytime she does, it’s a great experience to live.
Social media has done a lot of good especially for Jackline Mensah as she shot to fame with magical comedy videos on TikTok and Instagram.
Jackline is arguably one of the most popular social media comedy video makers and trust she, she will make you burst into laughter with humour.
She is good at what she does and with such energy and consistency, beyond the sky is her limit.
